In today’s world, customers have become more open to exploring and purchasing products made in different parts of the world, opening up opportunities for better international trade. Many Indian exporters are opting for e-commerce exports to take their products to international customers without too much investment. However, to start a global business, IEC is one of the important documents. Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), IEC (Importer Exporter Code) can be applied directly on the DGFT website. After you have successfully furnished the documents required for the application of IEC, you can check the status online.

What is IEC status?

DGFT has introduced a mechanism for exporters to track the status of their IEC certificate application. This was done to simplify processes and promote paperless transactions. Users can track their IEC status through the DGFT website in the two ways:
• To check if the IEC is registered at the DGFT headquarters - a PAN card-based IEC check is done.
• To ensure that the IEC has reached the ICEGATE location - the user must submit their IEC and fill in the captcha as shown on their screen.

Different types of IEC status and actions required

The DGFT came up with a facility to help IEC holders check the status of their IEC application and transmission status to ICEGATE. Following are some of the types of IEC statuses and the respective actions to take6:

0- NORMAL: IEC can be used
1- BLACK LISTED: Contact DGFT
2- SUSPENDED: Contact DGFT.
3- CANCELLED: Contact DGFT.
4- CLEAR FROM BLACK LIST: Transmit IEC from DGFT with 00 error code.
7- REVOKE SUSPENSION: IEC is revoked from suspended status.
8- REVOKE CANCELLATION: IEC can be used.
9- AMENDMENT: Changes to IEC have been made.

Tips for obtaining IEC in a hassle-free way

1. Individuals can use either the name of their company or their name directly to apply for IEC.
2. Although a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is not compulsory to apply for an IEC, it has been introduced in IEC to strengthen the IEC issuance and modification processes. You can use either DSC or Aadhar authentication for signing the IEC application form.
3. After ICEGATE accepts all the documents of the applicant, an IEC is auto-generated. The DGFT will now send an intimation regarding the allotment of IEC to the applicant through an SMS and e-mail, along with a hyperlink through which the e-IEC can be downloaded and printed.
