Documentation and compliance checklist to sell globally on Amazon

Here are some key documents you'll need to start exporting from India:

Importer Exporter Code (IEC)

The Importer Exporter Code is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India. It enables exporters to access various incentive schemes and tax benefits, such as exemption from GST on exported goods and services when filing a Letter of Undertaking (LUT).

Authorized Dealer (AD) code

An AD Code is a 14-digit code, which is given by the bank where the exporter maintains a business current account. This code, printed with the bank letterhead, can be obtained after the exporter has registered for an IEC by the DGFT. It has lifetime validity.

Letter of Undertaking (LUT)

Letter of undertaking (LUT) allows exporters to export goods or services without paying Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST). Exporters can generate an LUT annually on the GST portal and share it with their logistics partner for shipping bill generation. Without an LUT, exporters must pay IGST upfront and seek refunds later when filing returns.

Importer of Record (IOR)

An Importer of Record (IOR) is responsible for ensuring that all exported products comply with legal and customs requirements of the country they are being imported into. An IOR is responsible for ensuring inspection and valuation of goods, and filing duties, taxes and other relevant documents.

Other documents:

Some of the other key documents required to export from India include:
1. Shipping bill: Shipping bill contains details of the exporter, consignee, goods, value, duties, and incentives claimed (like RoDTEP).
2. Commercial invoice: Commercial invoice acts as a bill for the goods sold. It includes product details, price, payment terms, HS code, and buyer-seller information.
3. Packing list: Packing list provides detailed information about how goods are packed — number of packages, weight, dimensions, and contents.
4. Bill of lading: Bill of lading provides proof of shipment, receipt of goods, and document of title.
5. Certificate of origin: Certificate of origin certifies the country where the goods are manufactured.
6. Insurance and inspection certificates: The insurance certificate provides coverage against loss or damage during transit.
