How to link Importer Exporter Code (IEC) with DGFT?
In this guide, understand the step-by-step process on how to link IEC with Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), documents required and its importance in export business from India.
An Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is an identification code granted by DGFT that is mandatory for import and export businesses in India. This is a 10-digit code with a lifetime validity for businesses that want to export from India or import to India. It is also mandatory for every IEC holder to update the details mentioned in the IEC on the DGFT website1. If it is not updated, IEC can be deactivated till further update process has been initiated by the holder. The exporter may not be able to avail benefits from DGFT under different schemes.
Documents required to link IEC with DGFT
Some of the documents required to link IEC with DGFT are2:
• PAN of the individual or business
• Registered email address and phone number for OTP
• Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of the business (DSC is the electronic equivalent of physical or paper certificates)
• Valid Aadhar number and other details for e-sign authentication

How to link IEC with DGFT?
An exporter can update IEC with DGFT registration on the official website by following these steps:
• Log on to the DGFT website and start your registration process. If already registered, you can directly login.
• Click on ‘link IEC’ button displayed on the home page.
• Enter your 10-digit IEC number.
• Authenticate the code through Aadhar-based OTP verification or using your registered DSC.
Once the IEC has been linked, exporter can view a) IEC details, b) modify IEC profile and c) print IEC certificate. Exporters can also benefit from various schemes and policies offered by DGFT and other Export Promotion Councils.
