If you’re an online seller, you know the importance of warehouses in the supply chain. An efficient warehouse is like the backbone of the business as it maintains your inventory and your order deliveries depend on it. The key to a successful business operation is maintaining a smooth flow of products in and out of the warehouse. Otherwise, an unorganized warehouse can create havoc on your business.

So how do you organize a warehouse?
Here are some easy and useful warehouse organization tips and ideas to store products in a warehouse.
1. Organize the area
Before diving into your inventory, you first need to analyze the warehouse space. Having an optimum storage space starts with planning the floor area. So, take a step back and look at the layout, and plan out the place on paper. Prepare a flow based on your operations, for example, assign an inventory inflow, storage places, and the order outflow route for packaging and delivery. Strategizing a floor plan beforehand will give you an overall idea of how your warehouse should look, helping you organize your inventory accordingly.
2. Classify inventory
Once you’ve mapped out your floor plan, it’s time to move to your inventory organization. Classify your inventory based on their size, shape, and quantity (for example, keeping similar-sized products together, keeping same brand products together, etc.) and then assign storage areas. This process simplifies finding products at the time of dispatch. You can take a note of the entire inventory and classify it into categories A (fast movers), B (medium movers), C (slow movers), and D (very slow movers). You can then place the fast-moving items in the easiest access zone and push the slow movers towards the back to maintain a smooth flow.
3. Segregate & label
This is just like arranging things at your home and kitchen. Once you have categorized the inventory into different zones, it’s time to allot separate sections to further ease the stocking process. You can organize items in storage boxes, bins, etc. to improve segregation. It’s quite handy, especially for smaller items that may get lost amidst bigger products.
The next step is labeling. Label them section-wise, category-wise, brand-wise, etc. This small step will go a long way in helping employees find products easily and speed up the process. You can even extend the habit of labeling for other purposes, like putting signage for any work in progress, hazardous materials, etc. to ensure safety.

4. Warehouse management system
Having an automated warehouse management system may work wonders for your business. Maintaining a large inventory can get hectic for anyone, hence availing a system that can do the job for you is always a great option. An automated system tracks the inventory in real-time and collects various information. It also performs several functions like classifying and slotting inventory, determining proper storage methods, tracking inventory movement, etc. You can analyze the data collected in the system to further improve and optimize the operations.
5. Maintenance
Lastly, maintaining an inventory is not a one-time job. With products moving in and out continuously, your inventory keeps changing rapidly. Hence, it’s important to perform regular inventory maintenance to keep everything in check. It includes checking stock availability, stock condition, equipment functionality, etc. This measure will reduce the chances of downtimes by taking care of issues beforehand.
