Helping the weavers of Kerala with sustainable income
"My name is Christie. I’m an Amazon seller. I studied and grew up in Kannur.
After moving to Trivandrum, I worked for the Cooperative Society as a textile designer. I witnessed first-hand the hardships faced by the weavers. Today in Kerala weavers earn only around 250-300 rupees per day. They don’t get more than that!
With an aim to support women, I resigned my government job and opened Looms & Weaves. It was a 250 sq.feet store in a mall. But I didn’t get support from anywhere, my loan didn’t get sanctioned, I was unable to market also. During its decline, when I had decided to shut down is when I got the Amazon contact! During that time in Trivandrum, Amazon was doing business, they were known. That is why we chose them.
Initially I was selling only 10 products on Amazon. After doing so, customers began asking for different specific products! And for that, I started designing them. Now, along with handloom materials and local Kerala spices, altogether I’m selling more than 700 products on Amazon.
My handlooms are woven 99% by women or I source them from different women based initiatives and societies. When I first started ‘LOOMS AND WEAVES’, there were no staff that I employed. Now, I have been able to directly employ 10 people and indirectly provide employment for around another 50 others.
Day by day, the orders are increasing through Amazon. If there were 70-75 orders yesterday, today we are dispatching 250 orders. And we have another 100 orders that need to be shipped out tomorrow morning. And thus to maintain this, I have to employ more staff.
Hence through Amazon, ‘LOOMS AND WEAVES’ is also growing!"
