Types of Barcodes: Choosing the right one

As a seller, when you design your final packaged products, you will certainly be choosing a barcode. Barcodes have many options, which can sometimes be confusing. In this article, we’ll give you a clearer understanding of each of them, so you can choose the right kind of barcode. We’ll also try to highlight the common uses for some of the common barcodes used all around the world.

One-Dimensional (1D) Barcode Types

This kind of barcode represents data by varying the widths and spacings of parallel lines. These include UPC and EAN code types.

UPC Code

Universal Product Code is used to label and scan consumer goods around the world. UPC-A is used for marking products which are sold at retail in the USA. UPC-E is a variation of UPC-A which allows for a more compact barcode by eliminating "extra" zeros. The UPC-A variation encodes 12 numerical digits while UPC-E is a smaller variation, which encodes only 6 numerical digits.
