Guide to product cataloguing

by Arshiya Dey on 09/03/2016
First, let’s start with what is ‘cataloguing’ – it’s a term, often used when selling products online but a lot of new sellers are often confused about what it means. Essentially, cataloguing is the process of listing your products. It covers quantity, type, specifications, price and detailed descriptions of the products you want to sell. Combined with product images, a good product catalogue helps delight your customers by giving them all the necessary information upfront and make the buying decision.
Now, how do you create a catalogue for your products on Amazon? To start, you will need to log into your Amazon selling account on Seller Central (if you still haven’t registered to sell on Amazon then you can click here).

Once you have logged in, click on the ‘Inventory’ section on the top menu. (For guidance, you can also go through the multiple cataloguing related videos on our Seller University Channel on YouTube). Once you are at the inventory section, you can download excel templates to create catalogues for different categories of products. Below mentioned are a few points that you must keep in mind before and while creating the catalogues:

1. Prepare

It is extremely important to know the requirements of the marketplace you want to create the catalogue for. Remember to log in to the Seller Central plaform to get the requirements for Amazon.in. Each product will have a set of product specifications (can be downloaded or referred to from the inventory section on Seller Central) that you will need to fill in the excel template before you start to list your products. These product specifications will include the product size, shape, color, quantity per order, images (from various different angles), durability and other necessary details that a customer ought to know before making a purchase. All images have to have a clear white background because of its increased clarity against the light color background. White colored products should have a transparent background.

Although your Seller Central account (you can log in from here) has all the information you require to create a catalogue all by yourself, you don’t have to feel lost if you don’t have the time to do this yourself. You can easily choose somebody from our third party Service Provider Network to get professional help for this

2. Create

Once you have gone through the inventory templates thoroughly, you can go ahead and start creating the catalogue. If you decide to use a professional vendor from our third party Service Provider Network, then you don’t have to worry at all as they are aware of Amazon standards and have worked on similar projects before. If on the other hand you are creating it all by yourself, then you can create a sample first. This reduces the chances of errors and re-work later and gets you more familiar with the file format. Once a sample is ready, you can start by creating the catalogue in detail.

Tip: For product descriptions, try to avoid adjectives. Keep the product details focused on the product specifics like its size, color, fabric, material used, ingredients etc.

3. Upload

Once your data file is ready, you can upload it directly on to the Seller Central platform. The process of uploading your catalogue and creating your inventory is called listing creation. As explained before, cataloguing is your best opportunity to control how your online store performs.
